Brivo B-BSSF-B Smart Reader
The B-BSSF-B is the single-gang reader in Brivo’s Smart Reader line, and the real story isn’t the matte-black plastic — it’s what you can build behind it. Put these on the doors, drop a Brivo panel in the closet, and you’ve got a genuinely modern access system: mobile credentials, encrypted card reads, cloud management, the works. It flush-mounts into a standard 1-gang box, which is the size box already sitting behind most existing readers, so a swap is usually clean.
Two ways it talks to the controller. It’ll run plain Wiegand if you’re tying into existing gear, but the reason to spec it is OSDP secure channel — the reader-to-panel run is encrypted, so you don’t have the old Wiegand problem where somebody pops the reader off the wall, gets at the wires, and clones or replays a credential. Configured right, there’s just no easy way around it. That’s what makes it fine to hang on a door that’s actually protecting something expensive — a pharmacy, an IT room, a stockroom — and not only a lobby.
For an HOA or an apartment building, the fun part is Bluetooth. Sure, mobile over BLE sits a notch under an encrypted smart card on paper, but convenience is the whole point and residents genuinely love it — and the front door of a multi-unit building isn’t a warehouse full of valuables, so you match the security to the door and “easy” wins. Brivo Mobile Pass gives you a spread: phone stays in your pocket and you just touch the reader to go in, or you open the app to unlock, or you set the app to require Face ID first — that last one’s much tighter but slower, and honestly overkill for a building entrance. Pick the mode that fits.
It also reads Brivo’s encrypted 13.56 MHz smart cards (B-SC, B-SCP) and the B-SF key fobs, so phones and cards run side by side. The matte-black face suits dark aluminum and glass storefronts; same reader in white is the B-BSSF-W. No keypad on this model — if you want a PIN, or fob-plus-PIN two-factor at a sensitive door, that’s the B-BSKF-B. No legacy 125 kHz prox either; the tri-tech B-BSPSF-B keeps old prox cards working while a building migrates. Multi-color LED and a beeper for clear feedback, IP55 for a covered vestibule or a garage landing, a −35 to 66 °C range that earns its keep after a Chicago winter or two, and it pairs with any current Brivo panel from the ACS100-E up to the ACS6000-E / 6100-E. We wire it, set up the OSDP secure channel, enroll it in your Brivo dashboard, and get credentials out to people. Still comparing models? The Brivo reader guide puts all six side by side — or just send us a photo of the door and we’ll match the reader to it.
