HID Signo PIV Contact — FIPS 201 Contact-Card Reader

The HID Signo PIV Contact Reader is a FIPS 201-compliant contact-interface reader from HID Global — the card gets inserted into a slot and read through its gold contact pins instead of over RF. Supports PIV / CAC / TWIC / FRAC contact cards plus contactless multi-technology (iCLASS SE, SEOS, MIFARE DESFire, HID Mobile Access) as backup. OSDP v2 AES-128 encrypted secure channel + Wiegand legacy support.

Nobody orders this one on a whim. It shows up when a contract security spec says authentication has to happen through the card’s contact chip — insert the card, the reader talks straight to the secure element, done. If the spec doesn’t say that, the contactless Signo 40 PIV does the same job faster.

Contact vs. Contactless PIV Reading

  • Contact PIV reads the secure element directly through the card’s gold pins — full PIV authentication protocol, with PIN verification at the chip level
  • Contactless PIV reads over NFC / RF — fine for standard PIV authentication, quicker at the door

Some contract specs require the contact read for stronger identity proofing. When yours does, this is the unit that satisfies the auditor — and the contactless side still handles everyday smart cards and phone credentials at the same door.

Where the Signo PIV Contact Fits
