Best Fit & Recommended For
HID pivCLASS R40 — FIPS 201 PIV Reader for Standard Wall Boxes
The HID pivCLASS R40 is the pure FIPS 201-compliant standard wall single-gang PIV reader from HID Global’s pivCLASS line — supporting PIV / CAC / TWIC / FRAC credentials at lower cost than the multi-technology Signo 40 PIV. Wiegand output, IP55-rated.
Of the pivCLASS line, this is the form factor that goes in most often — it drops onto the standard single-gang box already sitting in the wall at a typical commercial door. When a tenant’s staff carry CAC or PIV cards and the lease says the door has to read them, the R40 does the job without the Signo 40 PIV price tag.
pivCLASS R40 vs. Signo 40 PIV — Which PIV Reader
| Need | pivCLASS R40 (this) | Signo 40 PIV |
|---|---|---|
| PIV / CAC / TWIC / FRAC | Yes | Yes |
| HID Mobile Access | No / limited | Yes |
| Apple Wallet | No | Yes |
| MIFARE DESFire | Limited | Yes |
| OSDP v2 native | Wiegand | Yes |
| Per-reader cost | Lower | Higher |
| Best fit | PIV-only doors on a budget | Multi-tech + mobile-first sites |
Pick pivCLASS R40 for PIV-only doors without mobile credentials. Pick Signo 40 PIV when mobile + multi-tech + OSDP v2 are in scope.
Where the pivCLASS R40 Wins
- Contractor office suites where staff badge in with PIV or CAC cards
- Standard single-gang wall boxes at contractor tenant doors — no drywall surgery needed
- Warehouse offices reading TWIC cards at the man-door
- Like-for-like pivCLASS R40 replacements
- PIV-only jobs where the multi-tech surcharge isn’t justified
