HID Signo 40T — Standard Wall Multi-Technology Reader with Mechanical Tactile Keypad
The HID Signo 40T is the mechanical-keypad variant of the Signo 40 standard wall reader from HID Global — supporting HID Mobile Access, Apple Wallet, iCLASS SE / SEOS, MIFARE DESFire, legacy 125 kHz Prox, and PIN-code 2-factor entry with a mechanical tactile keypad providing physical button feedback. OSDP v2 AES-128 encrypted secure channel + Wiegand legacy support. IP55-rated.
The “T” in 40T stands for tactile — physical buttons that work with gloves, in cold weather, in rain / snow / wet conditions where capacitive-touch keypads fail or become unreliable. From November to March, a loading-dock keypad around here sees nothing but gloved hands — this is the one built for that.
When Mechanical Keypad Beats Capacitive
The capacitive-touch keypad on the Signo 40K works for most indoor positions. Switch to the mechanical-keypad 40T when:
- Workers wear gloves — capacitive touch requires bare-finger or capacitive-glove contact; mechanical buttons work with any glove
- Cold weather — Chicago winter outdoor entries where capacitive touch becomes unreliable in extreme cold
- Wet conditions — rain / snow / sleet on the keypad surface (capacitive touch can mis-register from water droplets)
- Industrial / manufacturing environments with grease, dust, or chemical exposure on hands
- Cold storage facility entries
The mechanical tactile keypad is purpose-built for environments where capacitive touch fails.
Signo 40T vs. Signo 40K — Choosing the Right Keypad
| Feature | Signo 40K (capacitive touch) | Signo 40T (this — mechanical) |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor protected | Best — clean look | Works |
| Outdoor exposed | OK in mild weather | Best — works in any conditions |
| Gloved hands | Requires capacitive gloves | Works with any glove |
| Wet / cold conditions | Can mis-register | Reliable |
| Industrial / dirty environments | Touch surface accumulates grime | Mechanical buttons handle it |
| Best fit | Indoor 2-factor (clean) | Outdoor / industrial / gloved 2-factor |
Where the Signo 40T Wins in Chicago
- Chicago outdoor or semi-outdoor entry doors with 2-factor authentication
- Industrial / manufacturing facility entries where workers wear gloves — Chicago industrial corridor, Northwest Side / Southwest Side
- Cold-weather outdoor entries (parking decks, exterior doors) where capacitive touch fails with gloves
- Loading dock + service-entry positions at commercial properties
- Construction-site temporary access during cold weather
- Auto repair / body shops with gloved-hand access
- Cold-storage facility entries
