Best Fit & Recommended For
HID Signo 40K — Standard Single-Gang Multi-Technology Reader with Capacitive Touch Keypad
The HID Signo 40K is the keypad-equipped standard single-gang access reader from HID Global’s Signo platform — supporting HID Mobile Access (Bluetooth + NFC), Apple Wallet employee badge, iCLASS SE, SEOS, MIFARE DESFire EV3, MIFARE Classic, and legacy 125 kHz HID Prox in a single reader, plus an integrated capacitive-touch keypad for PIN-code 2-factor authentication. Communicates over OSDP v2 with AES-128 encrypted secure channel + Wiegand legacy support. IP55-rated for indoor and protected outdoor positions. Mounts in a standard US single-gang electrical box.
Wherever the wall already has a single-gang box, the 40K drops straight in — which is why it’s our default two-factor pick for office server rooms, HOA entries with resident PIN codes, and restaurant cash offices where card-only isn’t enough.
Why Single-Gang + Keypad Together
The Signo 40K combines two requirements:
- Standard wall-flush single-gang form factor — clean appearance against finished walls, mounts in standard US electrical box
- 2-factor authentication — card + PIN entry for sensitive door positions
Pick the Signo 40 (no keypad) when 1-factor card-only is sufficient. Pick the Signo 20K (mullion + keypad) for narrow door frames or glass mullions where standard wall mount won’t fit.
When 2-Factor Authentication Matters
Card-only access works for most commercial doors. PIN 2-factor is required at:
- Server rooms, IT closets, network rooms (cybersecurity audit requirement)
- Pharmacy and medication storage at storefront clinics (HIPAA)
- HOA front-door entries (resident-PIN policy for after-hours access)
- Cash-handling areas (loss-prevention)
- Electrical / mechanical rooms at larger commercial buildings
The Signo 40K’s capacitive-touch keypad is water-resistant and tamper-resistant — no mechanical wear, no spring failures, no liquid intrusion through button gaps. Ideal for high-cycle door positions.
Signo 40K vs. Signo Lineup — Choosing the Right Form Factor
| Feature | Signo 20 | Signo 20K | Signo 40 | Signo 40K (this — single-gang + keypad) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Form factor | Mullion (narrow) | Mullion + keypad | Single-gang (wall) | Single-gang + keypad |
| Keypad | No | Yes | No | Yes — capacitive touch |
| Best fit | Glass mullions, elevators | Narrow frames + 2-factor | Standard wall-flush — 1-factor | Standard wall + 2-factor — most common 2-factor pick |
Where the HID Signo 40K Wins in Chicago

- Multi-tenant residential sensitive areas — Loop, River North, Mag Mile high-rise back-of-house
