HID Signo 20 PIV — Compact Mullion FIPS 201 Reader for PIV / CAC Credential Doors

The HID Signo 20 PIV Reader is the FIPS 201-compliant variant of the HID Signo 20 compact mullion reader from HID Global — adding government PIV / CAC / TWIC / FRAC credential support to the standard Signo 20’s multi-technology + mobile reading. Mullion form factor with OSDP v2 AES-128 encrypted secure channel + Wiegand legacy support. IP55-rated for indoor and protected outdoor positions.

The Signo 20 PIV earns its slot at contractor and supplier offices where the contract language requires FIPS 201 credential reading — a defense supplier’s suite door, a fabricator running DOD purchase orders, a dock office where drivers carry TWIC cards. Anywhere a compact mullion reader is needed AND government-issued PIV credentials must be accepted.

What FIPS 201 PIV Credentials Mean

FIPS 201 (Federal Information Processing Standard 201) is the U.S. government standard for PIV (Personal Identity Verification) credentials issued to federal employees and contractors:

  • CAC (Common Access Card) — DOD military + civilian + contractors
  • TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) — port, vessel, transportation workers
  • FRAC (First Responder Authentication Credential) — fire, EMS, law enforcement

These credentials use cryptographic certificates issued by approved federal CAs and provide much stronger identity assurance than commercial credentials. When a contract or regulation says the door has to read them, it has to be through a FIPS 201-compliant reader — a standard commercial reader that can’t validate the certificate doesn’t satisfy the requirement.

Where the Signo 20 PIV Wins in Chicago

  • Contractor and supplier offices whose defense work requires PIV / CAC reading at the suite door
  • Machine shops and fabricators holding DOD supply contracts with badge requirements
  • Warehouse and dock offices where TWIC cards are the credential drivers actually carry
