HID iCLASS SE R10 — Compact Mini-Mullion Smart Card Reader for Elevators + Narrow Frames

The HID iCLASS SE R10 is the smallest reader in HID Global’s iCLASS SE lineup — a mini-mullion contactless smart card reader supporting iCLASS SE and SEOS 13.56 MHz credentials with cryptographic mutual authentication and encrypted data exchange between the card and reader. IP55-rated for indoor and protected outdoor positions. Mini-mullion form factor — fits the narrowest door frames, elevator cab panels, and space-constrained installations where standard single-gang readers won’t fit.

Most of the R10s we hang end up inside elevator cabs at condo and co-op high-rises running floor restrictions, or on glass storefront mullions where a single-gang reader has nowhere to sit. If the building already runs iCLASS SE or SEOS cards and space is the constraint, this is the reader.

Why iCLASS SE Over Legacy Prox

iCLASS SE credentials use mutual authentication + encrypted data exchange — the card and reader authenticate each other before any data is exchanged. Compared to legacy 125 kHz HID Prox cards (which can be cloned with inexpensive RFID equipment for under $50), iCLASS SE credentials provide:

  • Cryptographic protection against card cloning
  • Diversified keys — each card carries unique cryptographic keys
  • Mutual authentication — neither side trusts the other until verified
  • Resistance to replay attacks — captured data cannot be reused

For Chicago commercial properties, condos, and HOAs where credential security matters, iCLASS SE is the entry-tier secure smart card platform. SEOS is the next-generation secure platform from HID; the iCLASS SE R10 reads both.

When to Choose the R10 vs. Larger iCLASS SE Readers

Form factorModelBest fit
Mini-mullion (smallest)R10 (this)Elevators, narrow glass mullions, space-constrained
Single-gang (standard wall)R15Standard wall-flush installation
Standard wall (larger)R40Standard commercial doors
Long-rangeR90Vehicle gates, parking-garage entries

The iCLASS SE R10 is the right pick when physical space is the binding constraint — the smallest reader in the iCLASS SE family.

Migration to Multi-Technology — When to Step Up

For projects mixing iCLASS SE / SEOS credentials with HID Mobile Access, Apple Wallet, MIFARE DESFire, or legacy 125 kHz Prox, step up to the Signo platform — multi-technology readers that handle every modern HID credential plus mobile credentials. The iCLASS SE R10 is the right fit when the deployment is committed to iCLASS SE / SEOS only.

Where the iCLASS SE R10 Wins in Chicago

  • Chicago condo / co-op high-rise elevator cab access panels — Loop, River North, Mag Mile, Streeterville, and North Side residential
  • Multi-tenant residential elevators with floor-restriction credentials — high-rise + mid-rise condo and rental properties
  • Narrow glass-door mullions at storefront entries — boutique retail, restaurant entries, professional service offices
  • Hotel guest-floor elevator credentials — Loop, River North, Mag Mile boutique hotels
  • Office tower elevators at Loop high-rises
  • Healthcare administrative-floor elevator restrictions at clinics and medical office buildings
  • Student housing elevator access at residential buildings
  • Narrow door frames where standard single-gang readers won’t fit
  • Existing iCLASS SE / SEOS credential deployments needing additional readers
