UniFi Cloud Gateway Max

Overview

The UniFi Cloud Gateway Max (UCG-Max) is a compact all-in-one network gateway that includes the UniFi Network controller, firewall, and a small amount of local storage for UniFi Protect camera recordings. It’s the entry point into the UniFi ecosystem for small deployments that don’t justify a full rack-mount setup.

Where It Fits in Security Networks

For small businesses with 2-4 cameras and a few access points, the UCG-Max provides everything needed in a single device: network management, VLAN configuration, firewall rules, and basic camera recording. It eliminates the need for a separate NVR, a separate controller, and a separate router.

That said, it has real limitations. The 128GB internal storage only supports a few cameras for a limited retention period. The single GbE LAN port means you’ll need an external switch for any deployment with more than one device. For larger systems, we recommend dedicated recording solutions and rack-mounted gateways.

When to Use vs When to Upgrade

Use the UCG-Max when:

• You have a small space with 2-4 cameras
• Budget and space are constrained
• You want a single device to manage everything
• Retention requirements are modest (days, not weeks)

Consider a larger setup when:

• You need more than 4-5 cameras
• Retention requirements exceed a few days
• You need redundancy or high availability
• The deployment includes access control or intercoms alongside cameras
